Tereos Recognized with 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award for Advancements in Water and Process Efficiency

WILMINGTON, Del. (USA) —  Solenis, a leading global provider of water and hygiene solutions, is proud to honor Tereos Açúcar e Energia Brasil SA with the 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award. This recognition highlights Tereos’ commitment to sustainable production through the optimization of water treatment processes and reduction of chemical inputs in its fermentation operations at their Cruz Alta plant.

“Recognizing initiatives like this reinforces our commitment to sustainability as an essential part of our DNA. This project is an inspiring example of how partnering with our customers can generate concrete results, while creating environmental, economic and social value. It is an honor to recognize this achievement that represents the future we want to build together.”, said Paula Elen Santos, Corporate Account Manager at Solenis.

Maintaining high-quality fermentation while minimizing environmental impact is a critical challenge for distilleries. Tereos sought to improve its microbiological control and oxidation processes while reducing its reliance on antibiotics and biocides. To achieve this, Solenis recommended replacing traditional sodium hypochlorite with Hypocal™ Desinfection System, a more efficient and sustainable oxidizing biocide that ensures optimal chlorine residual levels while improving system cleanliness and microbiological control.

"Sustainability in industrial processes requires both innovation and a willingness to challenge conventional methods," said Adriano Marques Gomes, Sales Manager at Solenis. "Tereos has demonstrated this commitment by improving its processes with the Solenis Efficient and Sustainable Fermentation Program (P.F.E.S), which has led to the optimization of its water treatment, reducing chemical reliance while enhancing efficiency. All of these combined efforts prove that environmental responsibility and operational excellence can go hand in hand, setting a new benchmark for the industry. We are proud to support their sustainability journey and recognize their achievements with this award.”

Sustainability Achievements

  • Reduction in Antibiotics and Biocides: Achieved a 30% reduction, primarily driven by using Hypocal, which improved microbiological control and system cleanliness while decreasing reliance on traditional chemical treatments.
  • Improved Water Treatment Efficiency: Optimized oxidation processes to enhance system cleanliness and minimize unnecessary chemical consumption, resulting on an annualized reduction of more than 9.8K CO2 t/Yr emissions, more than 2.9 million m3 of fresh water use, and 2.3M kW/Yr energy savings.

“It’s such an honor to be recognized. At Tereos, we are constantly seeking to improve our processes to have a business model that combines productivity and sustainability in our operations. We rely on key partners like Solenis to ensure a sustainable and efficient production chain at every stage. We remain committed to sustainability improvements to reduce our environmental footprint”, said Eneas Cordeiro, Executive Process Manager.

Established in 2020, the Solenis Sustainability Awards recognize specific and verifiable customer projects that have, over a period of 12 months, delivered measurable results against at least one of five sustainability indicators: reduced water use, reduced energy consumption, decreased greenhouse gas emissions, optimized raw material utilization, or reduced waste. Tereos exemplifies these principles through its innovative approach to resource efficiency and operational excellence.
