Whole Foods Market Recognized with 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award for Reducing Water and Waste from Cleaning Operations

May 7, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WILMINGTON, Del. (USA) — Solenis, a leading global provider of water and hygiene solutions, is proud to honor Whole Foods Market with the 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award. This recognition highlights Whole Foods Market's commitment to reducing its environmental impact through strategic product transitions that conserve water and minimize waste across its operations in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

Operating a large-scale retail business requires balancing high sanitation standards with sustainability. Whole Foods Market achieved significant reductions in water use and packaging materials by transitioning to more concentrated cleaning products.

Water Conservation

Whole Foods Market transitioned to no-rinse single application cleaner, which uses 70% less water when compared to traditional wash, rinse, and sanitize methods. This change saves an estimated 12 to 15 gallons per day per location, totaling approximately 2.5 million gallons annually.

Material Reductions

The company reduced 57% of plastics and 61% of carboard used annually in cleaning operations when compared to less concentrated products, through improved packaging solutions in high-concentrate cleaning products.

Whole Foods Market remains committed to continuous sustainability improvements, exploring further opportunities to minimize environmental impact through smarter product formulations and supply chain improvements.

Established in 2020, the Solenis Sustainability Awards recognize specific and verifiable customer projects that have, over a period of 12 months, delivered measurable results against at least one of five sustainability indicators: reduced water use, reduced energy consumption, decreased greenhouse gas emissions, optimized raw material utilization, or reduced waste. Whole Foods Market exemplifies these principles through its proactive approach to sustainability in the retail sector. Read more about the awards and other winning projects on Solenis.com.
