GoalImprove the performance of customer's starch-based strength program.

Customer Challenge

A towel producer located in the Midwestern United States was looking to improve the performance of its starch-based strength program. Limitations of its existing strength program included speed and runnability bottlenecks and the perceived lack of synergy between starch and the wet strength resin.

Recommended Solution

Solenis recommended the use of Hercobond Plus HC, an onsite generated GPAM technology. This technology works synergistically with wet strength resins to develop strength beyond what a traditional strength program can provide. There are no shelf life or storage concerns with the product and because the product is produced onsite, the number of product deliveries are greatly reduced.

Results Achieved

Upon starting the Hercobond Plus HC program at a dosage ranging from 2.5-4.0 lbs/T, depending on grade, the mill was able to achieve significant speed gains across all grades trialed and significant reductions in wet strength use. Certain grades always required additional refining to supplement the strength program, but this was eliminated with the use of the Hercobond technology. The increased production rate and runnability of the machine and savings for the wet strength program more than paid for the added dry strength investment.
