Xelorex™ Plus Paper Performance Additives

Xelorex, a family of paper performance additives that have revolutionized wet-end papermaking, is getting even better with the addition of Xelorex Plus. Unlike traditional polyvinylamine (PVAm) polymers, which are shipped in liquid form to papermaking sites, Xelorex Plus is shipped as a dry product, which reduces transportation demands. Because fewer trucks are required to supply the product, papermakers who choose Xelorex Plus can slash transportation costs tenfold and contribute to reduced CO2 emissions.

They also benefit from increased customization options. With Solenis’ proprietary on-site generators, papermakers can synthesize a PVAm solution tailored to their mill’s unique needs and offering, whether they specialize in packaging, graphic and specialty, or tissue and towel grades.

Customers using Xelorex Plus paper performance additives realize significant performance and sustainability benefits:

Performance Benefits
  • Improved dry strength
  • Improved formation
  • Improved initial wet web strength (IWWS)
  • Reduced number of breaks
  • Improved productivity
  • Increased effectiveness in a broad range of furnishes
  • Improved retention and drainage
  • Reduced basis weight
  • Reduced need for other chemicals, such as sizing, contaminant control and retention additives
Sustainability Benefits
  • Reduced shipping/freight
  • Reduced steam consumption
  • Increased recycled fiber utilization
  • Expanded production capabilities, including lighter-weight grades
  • Reduced fiber and energy costs
  • Improved machine cleanliness

Xelorex Plus additives are designed for use in all type of paper grades, but they perform particularly well in packaging grades like containerboard and folding boxboard. They work over a broad pH range and are tolerant to sulfites, pH, alkalinity and conductivity swings.

How It Works

Xelorex Plus additives contain unique polymers that efficiently form both hydrogen and ionic bonds with fibers and fines. The flexible charge density of the polymers also increases ionic attraction and delivers dramatic step changes in retention, drainage and charge control. Whether it comes to reducing complexity in production, increasing stability of operations, boosting productivity or improving cost-efficiency, Xelorex Plus additives address a broad range of needs using an innovative on-site manufacturing technology.

On-site Production for Sustainable Performance

The manufacturing process for Xelorex Plus starts with a supply of the active dry polymer, which can be stored, shelf-stable, for several months. Next, using Solenis’ generator, the polymer is converted to a liquid product with chemical properties customized to a customer’s specific needs and application requirements. The result is enhanced performance, value-added results and increased sustainability.
