Hard water is one of the most common and potentially costly water quality challenges in commercial and industrial facilities. So what exactly does a water softener do, and why does it matter?
“Hardness” refers to dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals naturally found in water. When hard water is heated, these minerals can come out of solution and form scale deposits. Even a thin layer of scale acts like insulation, forcing equipment to work harder and consume more energy.
A water softener prevents these issues by removing hardness minerals before they can cause problems.
Most industrial and commercial softeners use ion exchange, a proven and reliable process. Here’s how it works:
1. Service Cycle (Softening)
Water flows through a tank filled with resin beads charged with sodium ions.
2. Regeneration Cycle
Over time, the resin becomes saturated with hardness minerals and must be recharged. Regeneration restores the resin using a brine solution.

It should be noted that the softener described here is a sodium-cycle water softer, which uses sodium chloride (NaCl) for the regenerant.
