Understanding Industrial Filtration: A Guide to Media Types

By: Light Industrial Solutions for Water Treatment | September 17, 2019 | Reading time: 1 minute

Waters from all over the world may contain suspended solids, microorganisms, and other unwanted contaminants that can cause damage to water systems. Heat exchangers, boiler tubes, cooling tower fill, system piping, etc. can become fouled without proper filtration. This results in a reduction in energy efficiency and increased maintenance repair costs.

Filtration is one of the oldest methods of water purification in the world. Over the years, new filtration methods have been developed to meet the needs of modern industrial applications. Today, there are many different types of media available designed to target a range of contaminants. Which type of media is right for your system will be determined by the specific contaminant type and size that needs to be removed.

How does a filtration system work?

As water flows through a filtration system, the media bed traps suspended solids while the filtered water passes to the service outlet. Once the filter media is fully loaded with suspended contaminants, the unwanted solids are then removed through a backwash cycle. This cycle purges contaminants on the media bed and sends them to a nearby drain. Typically, the filter control system automatically initiates the backwash cycle using a pressure differential switch or a time clock control.

Types of Filtration Media Available

With so many options, how do you choose the correct media for your system? Chem-Aqua uses a series of field and laboratory tests to determine the contaminant type and particle size to be removed. One of our experienced representatives can test your water and offer a free estimate on a filtration system that will reduce suspended solids and increase overall system efficiency.
