World Environment Day: Turning Sustainability into Measurable Impact

By aligning innovation and operations to customer needs, Solenis delivers measurable sustainability outcomes that support efficiency, resilience and long-term value creation

By: Dr. Lotta Kanto Öqvist | June 4, 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes

Each year, World Environment Day highlights both the urgency and the opportunity ahead. Climate change, water scarcity and biodiversity loss are reshaping economies, supply chains and communities. Across industries, our customers are being asked to do more with fewer resources while operating in an increasingly complex environmental landscape. This year’s theme reinforces a simple idea: Progress depends on  translating environmental ambition into measurable outcomes. At Solenis, that principle guides how we help our customers address sustainability challenges. Our approach is built around helping customers operate more efficiently, responsibly and resiliently.

From Commitment to Performance

Sustainability is often defined by commitments. What matters more is execution—how those commitments translate into outcomes in real operating environments. At Solenis, sustainability is embedded in how we work with customers.

It is reflected in clear targets, disciplined execution and measurable outcomes across our business:

  • 63% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2035 based on a 2024 baseline*
  • 37.5% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2035 based on a 2024 baseline*
  • Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

*Near-term Science Based targets have been validated by SBTi

These priorities shape how we manage energy, water and raw materials across our manufacturing network and supply chain. That matters not only in our own operations, but also for customers, because improvements in our footprint can help reduce impacts across their value chains as regulatory and reporting expectations increase. This work aligns with frameworks such as the Science Based Targets initiative and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing consistency and transparency as expectations evolve.

Sustainability as a Business Driver

The link between sustainability and business performance is increasingly clear. Reducing energy use lowers operating costs. Improving water efficiency builds resilience. Strengthening supply chain transparency reduces risk. These are the same pressures our customers are navigating every day. In our business, sustainability is directly linked to cost efficiency, customer retention and long-term growth. Our ability to help customers navigate these pressures is a key driver of value. That is why we integrate sustainability into how we operate. From procurement and manufacturing to innovation and customer engagement, these priorities shape decision making and execution.

In 2025, this approach delivered:

  • A 13.6% reduction in energy consumption across our direct operations
  • A 14% reduction in operational emissions
  • Continued investment in projects that reduce environmental impact while improving efficiency

These outcomes reflect a shift from ambition to execution, while reinforcing our ability to support customers in achieving similar efficiencies.

Delivering Impact Through Customer Partnerships

While our operational footprint matters, our largest impact comes through the work we do with customers. Solenis operates in water intensive and resource sensitive industries, where incremental improvements in efficiency can deliver meaningful environmental and financial benefits.

Through our solutions and services, we help customers:

  • Reduce water consumption
  • Lower energy use
  • Minimize waste
  • Improve carbon emissions

And we measure that impact in the context of their operations. Our ValueAdvantage program quantifies both environmental and financial outcomes. In 2025 alone, it delivered $349 million in documented value for customers, alongside measurable reductions in water use, energy consumption and emissions.

Examples include:

  • Saving the equivalent of tens of thousands of Olympic-sized swimming pools of water through process optimization
  • Avoiding emissions comparable to those produced by a coalfired power plant through advanced chemistries
  • Diverting significant volumes of plastic waste from landfill through improved packaging solutions

These are not modeled outcomes. They are verified results delivered in partnership with customers, grounded in real operating environments and measured against their specific goals.

From Insight to Impact

Delivering measurable environmental outcomes requires more than targets. It depends on understanding and optimizing complex systems in real time. At Solenis, we combine chemistry, digital monitoring and applied expertise to help customers reduce water use, improve energy efficiency and minimize operational waste.

Solutions such as HexEvalTMClearPointTM and OnGuardTM support this work by providing greater visibility and control across cooling and water systems. In practice, these approaches have enabled increased water reuse, reduced freshwater demand and improved system efficiency in customer operations, demonstrating how targeted innovation can help translate sustainability goals into real-world results.

Innovation at the Core

Sustainability and innovation are closely linked. Our customers are facing increasingly complex environmental challenges, and our ability to help solve them will define future growth. At Solenis, more than 90% of our innovation pipeline is focused on sustainability or circularity, with a growing share aimed at reducing product carbon footprint. These innovations are driven by what our customers need to operate more efficiently and with less environmental impact. This is already visible in areas such as water treatment technologies, concentrated chemistries and packaging innovation, where we are reducing resource use while maintaining performance in customer applications.

We continue to invest in:

  • Water treatment and reuse
  • Circular packaging solutions
  • Safer and more sustainable chemistries
  • Digital tools that optimize resource use

These investments position us to support customers as their needs evolve.

Managing Risk in a Changing Landscape

Environmental challenges are not distant risks. They are present realities. Water stress, climate disruption and biodiversity loss are already reshaping operating environments. These same dynamics are influencing our customers’ priorities.

At Solenis, we address these shared challenges through:

  • Climate risk assessments evaluating physical and transition risks
  • Water stress assessments across our manufacturing footprint
  • Supplier engagement programs addressing emissions, resource use and human rights
  • Reporting aligned with frameworks such as CSRD, TCFD and CDP

A significant portion of emissions sits within the supply chain, reinforcing the need for greater transparency and closer collaboration across the value chain. At the same time, not all solutions are fully defined. Areas such as fuel switching and supply chain decarbonization will require continued technology development, industry collaboration and capital investment. Progress will happen incrementally.

Enabling People, Strengthening Communities

Sustainability is also about people, including the employees and communities that support our customers’ operations. Our approach extends beyond environmental performance to how we contribute to long-term resilience.

Through programs like SolenisGives and our Creating Shared Value initiatives, we are working to:

  • Improve access to hygiene and sanitation
  • Reduce waste through reuse and upcycling programs
  • Support local communities through volunteering and partnership

These efforts complement our work with customers and reflect a broader view of sustainability across the communities and systems in which we operate. Looking Ahead World Environment Day is both a moment of reflection and a call to action. The path forward will require continued innovation, deeper collaboration, greater transparency and a sustained focus on execution. At Solenis, the direction is clear. We are helping our customers make measurable progress in more sustainable industrial operations, particularly in water intensive and resource sensitive sectors. We are working alongside them to translate sustainability goals into verified outcomes. And we are continuing to invest in the capabilities needed to navigate an increasingly complex landscape together. There is more work to do, and we are focused on helping customers make measurable progress while strengthening collaboration across the value chain. On World Environment Day, that is a commitment worth reinforcing.
