Ion Exchange

Innovative chemistries, advanced monitoring and control systems, and expert support for your water treatment challenges.

Ion exchange technology removes undesirable dissolved solids from water in exchange for desirable dissolved solids. It is based on the fact inorganic salts dissolve in water to generate individual cations (positively charged) and anions (negatively charged). Ion exchange processes do not remove ions from water, but instead simply exchange unwanted ions in water for more desirable ions of a like charge. These reactions occur on ion exchange resins, which are porous synthetic materials specifically designed for reaction with either cations (cation resin) or anions (anion resin).

Solenis manufactures an extensive line of ion exchange systems ranging from 10” to 48” in diameter depending upon the model. Properly sizing an ion exchange system is essential to its effectiveness and efficiency. Customization of equipment design is available to meet site-specific needs.

Let’s take a look at some of our offerings

Hard water (calcium and magnesium) is a common issue in many areas. It can lead to various problems including scale formation, reduced heat transfer efficiency, and under-deposit corrosion. Water softeners remove hardness from system makeup waters to help mitigate these problems. We offer a variety of standard and custom system designs to help in most situations.

  • Alternating Water Softener
  • Demand Flow Water Softeners
  • Time Clock Water Softener
  • Single Meter-Initiated Water Softener

High alkalinity can lead to carbonic acid attack of steam condensate systems, boiler carryover, and scale formation. Chloride-cycle dealkalizers help to reduce alkalinity in water by exchanging bicarbonate ions with chloride ions. We manufacture a full line of dual tank dealkalizers with electronically controlled regeneration based upon the volume of water processed through the resin bed. As one tank is in service, the other is in standby or regeneration mode.

Steam boiler condensate sometimes contains contaminants such as hardness and iron which can lead to scale deposits, inefficient heat transfer, and boiler tube overheating. When other proactive solutions cannot be implemented upstream, these unwanted contaminants can be removed with one of our custom-designed condensate polishers.
